A House of Signals

When I wrote about the Bridge House I told you, that it has apartments reserved for seniors. This house, the Signal House, is reserved for juniors, or rather young people up to the age of 25. The 72 apartments have been designed so 4 people share kitchen, living room and bathroom. All in all 288 young people live here. The idea of making apartments for young people is a good one, I think, mainly because they are affordable (through heavy subsidies from the municipality). These are perfect for people to try life out without having to buy one of the very expensive apartments in Copenhagen, especially for those without "rich" parents to buy it for them. Though I think that this house is probably not for those craving peace and quiet:-)

  1. Certainly not peace or quiet if four share a kitchen...fascinating how things are done in your city...such revolutionary ideas! Enjoyed this...a colorful post on so many levels :-) ~Janine

  2. I would go back to 20-25 tomorrow and happily share everything, enjoying the chaos! A very good idea and a nice, colorful building.
When you turn 26 do they put yours things at the door?

  4. Oh, not for me anymore certainly :(. 72 apartments, you mean, there are exactly for people in every apartment? I don't mind having a 3x5m2 sized apartment (as a common size in my town)with my own super tiny kitchen and bathroom :). Would love to see the chaos, but from outside it looks so peaceful and colorful.
Same question with Mr.Poet, do you think they have every name written with sign: "29 days to go"?

  5. I tend to agree that peace and quiet is not likely to be readily available in these quarters...at the same time, persons in that age group looking to live here are probably not all that interested in peace and quiet...

You certainly have interesting structures...for some reason some of them look Chinese in my weird mind's eye...

    Have a great weekend, Chris!

  7. I think they have some time to pack up, but they do get "encouraged" to move on, because the waiting list for these apartments for the young and not-so-quiet tend to be quite long. After a few years here I guess that most people tend to want to move along anyway, so it's probably not a big problem. The house rules do talk about loud music and how to make agreements between roommates about cleaning and common meals. But I believe they have problems with different levels of cleanliness and taste in music:-)

I know housing is at premium in Japan, Henny, but we tend to be a bit pampered here, in particular the young ones; if we don't have at least 60 sq. meters pro persona we tend to feel hemmed in:-)

BTW I forgot to tell you, that the Signal House got its name after an army signalpost that stood here, when the area was a shooting range.
