Golden apples

The fountain Caritasbrønden (Charity Well) on Gammel Torv (Old Square) in Copenhagen have surprise on certain days; golden globes representing golden apples is put in the upper fountain to jump on the jets of water. This occurs on Royal birthdays and Constitution Day and is a tradition going back to the 18th Century.

The fountain is from 1608, built by King Christian IV, the great Danish renaissance builder, and it's the oldest fountain in Copenhagen.

  1. Christopher, I just love fountains. Well, I must say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your eclectic collection of photographs this month. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, I’ve just loved the quirkiness and character of the objects you’ve captured on camera. My favourites so far have been (in no order):-

    • A Big Painting (I just love the depiction of ‘community’)
    • Lion (I like the energy of the ‘roar’ of one of these copper lions)
    • Fire (I do like the inscription you translated for us: “The first stone I have laid / Why I thank the Lord
What the fire have devoured / The Lord again have given...”)
    • Water Spout (I loved the pink bike beneath as it reminded me of my ‘pink bike’ currently in storage)
    • Hats (I liked all the ‘hat’ images... they were great fun!)

Btw, many congratulations on all your awards – definitely well deserved :)

  5. @CathM: Welcome back, you've been missed:-) I hope you can now enjoy some peace and quiet from your work.

@Joo: It's only on the Queen's, the Price Consort and the two princes's birthdays and on Constitution Day on June 5th (that's the date of this photo) that these golden globes are in the fountain. A guard keeps a watchfull eye on them all day. Btw the sphere are made of bronze with a gold layer.
