A king of the arts
Frederick V was king of Denmark and Norway from 1746 and he founded the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in Copenhagen, which officially opened on 31 March 1754, his 31st birthday. Frederick also purchased what would become known as the Danish West Indies from the Danish West India Company in 1754.
His statue is the one at Amalienborg Square in Copenhagen.

The very same islands where Peter Von Scholten set the slaves free in 1848.
ReplyDeleteThat is correct. Peter von Scholten emancipated all slaves in the Danish West Indian Islands and was recalled and trialed before being acquited shortly before his death for doing so! i have not seen it but I have heard that a film about his last years as a governor-general was made in 1987.
ReplyDeleteYou should see it. It has Ole Ernst as Peter von Scholten and Etta Cameron as his "local" wife.
