Looking at the Marble Church

 

On the square in front of the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen, the equestrian statue of Danish king Frederik V looks towards the church bearing his name, The Frederik Church. The dome of this church, nicknamed the Marble Church for its use of that material, is one of the dominant features of the city's skyline.

A king of the arts

Frederick V was king of Denmark and Norway from 1746 and he founded the Royal Danish Academy of Art (Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi) in Copenhagen, which officially opened on 31 March 1754, his 31st birthday. Frederick also purchased what would become known as the Danish West Indies from the Danish West India Company in 1754.
His statue is the one at Amalienborg Square in Copenhagen.

Marble Church

Frederick's Church, popularly known as The Marble Church (Danish: Marmorkirken) is located just north of Amalienborg Palace. The cornerstone of the church was laid in 1749 by Frederick V of whom an equestrian statue stands in the palace complex.

The inspiration for this church was probably St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and it has the largest church dome in Scandinanvia.
