HDMY Dannebrog (A540)

Her Danish Majesty's Yacht Dannebrog (Danish: KDM Dannebrog) was launched by Queen Alexandrine in Copenhagen in 1931, and commissioned on 26 May 1932. The yacht now serves as the official and private residence for HM The Queen of Denmark, HRH the Prince Consort, and members of the Royal Family when they are on official visits overseas and on summer cruises in Danish waters.

The Dannebrog, named after the flag of Denmark and has dual functions: it is primarily the Royal Yacht during peacetime; it can become a hospital ship during emergency alerts or war.

  1. The current royal yacht is the second, that has been in service. The first one was a paddle steamer, that served from 1879 and up till 1931, when the current ship was commissioned.
King Frederiks IX used the yacht a lot, as he was a man of the seas. One of the summer cruises, one year, even took then and the ship to the Faroe Islands. Normally the ship is sent on ahead, but that year they took the entire trip.
Quenn Margrethe II aimes to visit as many places as possible on their summer cruises every year. And most of the times she aimes to visit towns, that she hasn't been to before.
