A pottery maker?

This nice old sign I found in Christianshavn on one of the old buildings there. I'm not sure, but I think it might have been the sign of a pottery maker; the elephant is often used as a symbol for work and it looks like a oven for pottery on its back. Or maybe the builder just liked this sign. Today it's a residence.

  4. I looked at this for quite awhile...I think you're probably right...especially with the elephant symbolizing work...

And a potter what probably one of the more respected persons in town so would deserve a sign like that...

    Very interesting...

I have been to Copenhagen recently and a tour guide told our group that the elephant denoted that beer used to be sold at the premisese. I think the item on the back of the elephant is a distillery, notice the mugs in the top left courner.

Hope this helps. Paul Chambers (England)

  6. Thank you for your comment, Paul. You might be right in your observation, as I've noticed Carlsberg also using the elephant as a symbol.
