Ivy on the wall

With all the old buildings in Copenhagen it's no surprise that the ivy has really taken root on some of the walls. And with autumn here the colours of it are fantastic.

Burned

On the 28th of September one of the landmarks of Copenhagen the sports and event hall KB-Hallen on Frederiksberg, burned. The massive fire gutted most of the hall but the fire brigade managed to save some of the adjoining buildings. As the building from 1938 is listed, it has been decided to rebuild it as it was before the fire. When that happens is still unsure.

The Crystal

New buildings are emerging all the time in Copenhagen these years. This one is Krystallen (The Crystal) on Kalvebod Brygge, the old wharf area that has been transformed into a row of office buildings and hotels. With its quirky angles and glass façades it really resemble a crystal. The building is used by Nykredit, a Danish mortgage firm.

A townhouse on the farm

One of the more peculiar houses at Brede Open-air Museum is this one; a townhouse with room for 4 or 5 families, each with their own "apartment". It wouldn't have been placed in a town but at a farm for the use of the families of the farm workers.

Grass on the roof

Imagine having to cut your roof like it was a lawn. On some of the houses at Brede Open-air Museum this seems to be necessary.

Poverty

Not only the big and rich farms are display at Brede Open-air Museum. Also poor and rundown hovels like this one from the Faroe Islands can be experienced.

Big farms

Some of the farms moved to Brede Open-air Museum are huge, complete with stables, furnished living rooms, outhouses and barns. Surrounded with fields you get a good indication of how the countryside of Denmark looked in the good old days before the agriculture got industrialized.

How to move a village

Just north of Copenhagen is Brede Open-air Museum, which is a huge collection of old houses from all over Denmark and Scandinavia. To preserve and exhibit the houses, they were carefully taken down at their place of origin, transported to Brede and re-assembled and restored here. This has created a collection of mainly farmhouses and a few townhouses that show the differences in building style in the Danish regions. And as this is one of the few free museums in Denmark, it's well worth the visit. More about this place in the days to come.

La Defense

The glass facades in modern buildings are as told before good as reflectors. Here it's one of the many opportunities in La Defense in Paris where I've captured both a kind of silo and its reflection.
