Time lapse again

 

My latest time lapse from Copenhagen is this one. Taken on Constitution Day, which in Denmark is the 5th of June, it starts very symbolic at the Danish Parliament Folketinget at Christiansborg Palace with the statue of King Frederik VII in the foreground. He was the king that decided to give Denmark a Constitution based on democracy in 1849. The rest of the time lapse will take you through many of the squares in the old park of the city.

 

High

The towers and spires in Copenhagen is at the moment being outnumbered by the construction cranes. Here it's the metro construction site at the central island of Slotsholmen, where the parliament is, that is competing with the tower of Nikolaj Church.

The sun was out

At this time of year in Copenhagen, the sun is an all too seldom guest, but when it finally shines a bit the city lights up. The bridge being graced with a few sun rays here is the so called Marble Bridge. It was built by Nicolai Egtved in 1739-45 and it connects the back of Christiansborg (the Danish parliament), where the Riding Ground is with the street Ny Vestergade.

Canals

 

 

Around the Danish parliament of Christiansborg are canals like this one. Quiet and nice on an early spring morning, they are almost iconic for Copenhagen. Small pleasure boats and larger houseboats mingle with boats from the harbour cruises and old museum boats. This canal is called Frederiksholms Kanal and has Christiansborg on the left and the National Museum on the right.

The Marble Bridge

The Marble Bridge and riding ground at Christiansborg Castle are all that survived the devastating fire of 1794. The Marble Bridge with its two pavilions marks the main entrance to the palace. The pavement is paved with Norwegian marble while the roadway is cobbled. The Palaces and Properties Agency finished restoring the riding ground and Marble Bridge in 1996. -RS

The start of the tourist season

The start of Spring also signals the ubiquitous canal tours being opened up. This year, the relatively warm winter has allowed the opening of the routes a little earlier than usual. New facilities opposite Christiansborg palace will also be fully operational this season.

In front of the parliament building at Christiansborg palace a lone protester has every day been appealing for peace since 2001.

A Dane in Rome

Danish neoclassicistic sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844), lived and worked in Rome for most of his life and some of his works are presented in the Thorvaldsen museum on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen next to Christiansborg Palace.

Historic Axelborg

These days it seems the whole of Copenhagen is a huge construction site with the new metro ring being built and reparations from last years flooding still happening everywhere.

The offices to which many travelers go to find information on Copenhagen is in the Axelborg with its distinctive dome and beautiful grand hall. It was built in 1920 and was the first office building in Copenhagen. It was in those times the second largest secular building in all of Copenhagen after Christiansborg.

Since then it has been the address for Denmark’s state radio broadcast service, banks and, today, a conference and banqueting company.

Christiansborg Palace

This imposing complex on the islet of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen is the only building in the world that houses all three of a country's branches of government: the executive power, the legislative power, and the judicial power.

The palace is open to the public after published schedule, with guided tours available.
