Big farms

Some of the farms moved to Brede Open-air Museum are huge, complete with stables, furnished living rooms, outhouses and barns. Surrounded with fields you get a good indication of how the countryside of Denmark looked in the good old days before the agriculture got industrialized.

How to move a village

Just north of Copenhagen is Brede Open-air Museum, which is a huge collection of old houses from all over Denmark and Scandinavia. To preserve and exhibit the houses, they were carefully taken down at their place of origin, transported to Brede and re-assembled and restored here. This has created a collection of mainly farmhouses and a few townhouses that show the differences in building style in the Danish regions. And as this is one of the few free museums in Denmark, it's well worth the visit. More about this place in the days to come.

Ice-cream

The perfect end of a day at Egeskov would for many be a nice big ice-cream. And just outside the gates is the last call for one of those. And you'll even be able to send that postcard to the rest of the family telling about your trip here.

Visit on a nice day

On a beautiful summer day Egeskov Castle is the perfect place to visit for the whole family, as there's something for everyone. And between the visits to the museums, tree tops or the castle itself, the sun can be enjoyed in the vast park.

Vertigo

Egeskov Castle has done a lot to attract families with children, and one of the more popular attractions here for the kids is the tree top walking. Gangways have been suspended between the trees in 10-15m height, making it possibly to walk just under the canopies of the trees. It's also a great test for you to see if you suffer from vertigo...

Horse-drawn

At Egeskov Castle is also a Museum of Horse-drawn Vehicles, and some of these old wagons are used for "public" transport around the grounds of the castle.

An open junkyard

On top of the museums for motorcycles and veteran cars is the open depository, where a large number of old cars, bikes and spare-parts are kept. And this is open to the public. Only one big question remains; how do they get the cars down from here?

This is not a stork

In Denmark the stork has been all but extinct for many years with only the occasional pair breeding here. But the image of the stork's nests on the roof of the farm, is still firmly rooted in the Danes traditional views of how a real farmhouse should look. At Egeskov Castle they obviously want to keep with the tradition, so without a real live stork, this one of plastic nests on one of the buildings.

When photographing cars I often opt for the details, and as veteran cars especially got a lot of those, the Veteran Car Museum at Egeskov Castle gave me plenty of motives.

Veteran Car Museum

The Veteran Car Museum at Egeskov Castle is filled with 50 classic cars, 8 air-planes and a helicopter. For anyone interested in old mechanic things, a visit here is a must.

Old-fashioned motorcycles

Egeskov Castle is the place to go if you're into old-fashioned motorcycles. The Motorcycle Museum here has a vast collection of these two-wheelers going right back to the first noisy ones, all in pristine condition. Just look for the building with the two motorcycles on the roof and you're there.

Don't get lost

With four mazes, among them supposedly the world's biggest one, there's ample chances of getting lost at Egeskov Castle. The Old Maze is closed, though, as the wear and tear on the paths was just too much for the beech hedges.

Ponds and waterlilies

The park around Egeskov Castle has a number of ponds and streams beside the old moat. Filled with ducks, geese and other waterfowl, they also have one of my favorite flowers, waterlilies.

One big garden

At Egeskov Castle the park has been transformed into a number of different gardens with themes like the Scent Garden, the English Garden and the Water Garden, all well maintained and cared for. So just for the gardens, this is a fine place to visit.
