A modern Venice

As told before the newly developed area of Sluseholmen reminds me of Venice with its canals, bridges and residences on both sides. There's still missing quite a bit in my opinion, as there's not many shops, cafés or restaurants so it is a very quiet area.

Every nook and cranny

In a city like Copenhagen the people seem very adapt at using every nook and cranny to find a place to relax, to reflect, to read a book or just to get some sun. This place under the Metropolis building in the South Harbour District is perfect for all of that.

Red carpet for the swimmers

The red carpet has been laid out at the harbour bath that I told you about yesterday. Hopefully it will be used a lot this weekend.

Time for a dip

As summer seems to hit Copenhagen this weekend with temperatures of up to 30C, this might be one of the more popular places. It's one of the harbour baths in Copenhagen Harbour that have sprung up during the last 5 years or so. Not too many years ago it would have been impossible to swim in the harbour unless you really wanted to catch more than a cold, but recently the water quality has improved so much that it's now perfectly OK to take a dip. This one is placed at Sluseholmen in the South Harbour district with the Metropolis building in the background.

A new Bridge

I often use a bit of time exploring the same areas of Copenhagen again and again just to notice the changes there during different seasons. In January I went to the South Harbour area (Sydhavnen), where the old harbour has been developed during the last few years into a residential and business area. To connect two of the islets a new bridge has been built, the Teglværksbroen, which I captured on this grey and calm winter day.

Going Retro IX

The retro pic of the day is from the disused coal storage for the H.C.Ørsted Powerplant in Copenhagen. This area has been taken completely over by the people with the spray cans and even this abandoned car has got a new coat of paint. One of the few areas in the harbour area not to have been newly developed, it looks really derelict with graffiti and decay everywhere you turn. A Neat Rhino

As mentioned in an earlier post I'm not a big fan of "unauthorized" graffiti. Some owners have surrendered their walls though, maybe out of the philosophy that it'll get a dose of nightly paint whatever they do, and given the wall to some worthy talent. This one is from a wall around a junk yard in the South Harbour area and I actually find it quite neat. The heaps of used cars stacked on the other side of the wall is another matter...

Horse Conqueror

The first series of my new themed photos will be of statues in Copenhagen. And I start with a statue in a workers neighbourhood in Copenhagen. Situated in the South Harbour area this statue seems a little out of place but that is common in Copenhagen. You can find statues and art in the strangest of places. The Horse Conqueror was made by Thomas Vincotte in 1885 and was a gift from brewer Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg.
