Valkyrie

The Norwegian-Danish sculptor, Stephan Abel Sinding, created this extraordinary sculpture in 1910 and today it stands in Churchillparken.

Many of the Sinding's sculptures are credited to Realism but together with Danish sculptor Niels Hansen Jacobsen, among others, is considered much more in the style of Symbolism. An example of his Symbolic work is his sculpture Valkyrjen (The Valkyrie.

In Norse mythology, a valkyrie is one of a host of female figures who decides who falls and dies in battle. The valkyries bring their chosen to the afterlife hall of the slain, Valhalla, ruled over by the god Odin.

Gun Boat Sheds

On the former naval base of Holmen in Copenhagen, rows of gun boat sheds line the island of  Frederiksholm. These where used for storing the canon boats used during the so-called Gun Boat War, 1807 - 1814 between Denmark-Norway and the UK. The use of gun boats on the Danish side was a necessity after the English had stolen the fleet after the bombardment of Copenhagen in 1807. Today the protected sheds are being converted into offices for mainly IT companies and architects.

The Tradition of the Historic Painting

The museum at Frederiksborg Castle has a long tradition of commissioning historic paintings of the high points of Danish history. And that is a tradition they still follow as is seen with this painting of a, to Danes, well-known incident during the war in the former Yugoslavia.
