A great many of the people visiting Cannes do it for the beaches and they sure are nice. On some of the beaches, especially the ones closest to the town, it's obvious that here you are to be seen. Others outside the town are for locals and families and seems much more relaxed.

Cannes on the southern coast of France was our next stop. And it was well worth the time. Famous for its film festival and its glamour it is a town full of contrasts; movie murals, glitter and a nice old town with narrow streets and small cafés. And a fabulous beach if you want to be burned to a crisp. Here you are to see and be seen.

A short stop in Monaco

On our way from Florence to Cannes we stopped for a few hours in Monaco, the tiny state surrounded by France. It might have been the heavy clouds that day or maybe the plastic feel of everything, but we soon decided that it was not a place for us to stay. The time was spend having a look at the harbour with the mighty yachts and a quick trip up the hill to the palace, before we drove on.

High Above Florence - Fiesole

In the hills just outside of Florence there's a little nice town called Fiesole, where you can spend a few hours when the crowds and heat of Florence becomes too much. There's a cathedral, a monastery, some Roman ruins, some Villas and this nice little square if you want to see something other than the view over Florence.

High above Florence stands Michelangelo's David, or rather one of the two replicas in the city. The original is at the Accademia Galleria and the other replica is at the original place just outside the Palazzo Vechio. Numerous other replicas exists around the world and we even got one in Copenhagen at the harbour.

The City of the Renaissance

Our trip round Europe took us to the beautiful city of Florence (Firenze in Italian), the city that is synonymous with the Renaissance. A couple of days there is not nearly enough to get more than a superficial view of the city with its many museums, palaces, churches and sculptures. The bridge Ponte Vecchio here is one of the most iconic places with its row of jewellery stores and other shops.

A Big Garden

The Royal Palace in Caserta is not only a really big building and museum. It's also a very big park, 120ha, with numerous fountains in a long cascade. Walking to the end will take most people an hour or two, while getting back is made easier by a bus.

A real gem to visit just east of Napoli is the Royal Palace in Caserta. Called the Swan song of Baroque it's a huge building, once the largest in Europe and today a great museum to visit. It's also a UN World Heritage site. With 1.200 rooms there's enough to see to last the whole day.

Pompeii

In AD 79 the volcano Vesuvius erupted, covering the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum in up to 25 meters of ash and pumice and killing scores of people. In 1749 Pompeii was rediscovered and excavations where started, excavations that are still ongoing to this day. A visit there is an absolutely must if you're in the area but expect crowds as it's one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.

Amalfi Coast

Driving along the Amalfi Coast can be quite a challenge if heights, narrow roads and tight bends are not your thing but it is beautiful. Make a stop in one of the picturesque towns that cling to the cliffs and enjoy a meal or just a coffee with a view.

Vietri sul Mare

Just at the south end of the beautiful Amalfi coast and to the north of Salerno is the little town of Vietri sul Mare, a perfect place to stay a few days and use as a base to explore the coast and its surroundings. Vietri is a cosy town and a centre of ceramics, especially colourful tiles, but as with the rest of the coastal towns around here, expect a lot of stairs and walking both up- and downhill to get around.

Lago di Bracciano

High above the lake Lago di Bracciano towers the old castle. Bracciano is a popular beach resort for Italians but foreign tourists seems to be far apart which is a shame as it's a nice place. For the cultural inclined there the castle and the very good Italian Air Force Museum. Again it's easily within driving distance of Rome for a quick day trip.

Frascati

Some of the small towns surrounding Rome can be nice to visit if you have the time and can get around by car. Frascati is one of these as it's just to the SE of Rome and within a half hour drive away. A sleepy town with a a truly Italian atmosphere, an almost abandoned and rundown park, a couple of mansions and a little art museum so you'll easily spend a few hours there. Or you can just enjoy an ice cream at the local piazza enjoying the view of the church of San Pietro.

Volcanic lakes

To the SE of Rome is a couple of really beautiful lakes that many tourists to Rome miss out on, Lago di Nemi and Lago Albano, but they are worth a visit if you happens to be able to get there. With steep hills around a deep blue lake they seem like a completely different world to busy Rome. Along the shores of Lago di Nemi is a small museum about the pleasure boats of Nero found there and an excavation of a Diana temple. And if you've had enough culture take a dip in the lakes from one the small beaches.

When in Rome with a car you don't want to use it in the city, as the traffic there is more than a bit chaotic and parking next to impossible. On the other hand a car becomes very much handy when you want to explore the surroundings. We took a quick trip to Ostia to see Ostia Antica, the old port of imperial Rome, but in Italy Mondays are not for visiting museums; they are (nearly) all closed that day. So the day was spent on exploring modern Ostia and Porto di Roma instead. This cat had the right idea about how to spend the warm summer day.

Piazza Navona

My favourite square in Rome is the Piazza Navona with its racetrack form, its three beautiful fountains and its crowds of people. The restaurants might be a bit too touristic (and pricy), the musicians and sellers a bit too pushy and the crowds a bit too non-local but to me this is Rome.

One of the best known symbols of Rome is this one, the Capitoline Wolf at the Capitoline Museums. Apparently I wasn't the only one thinking that this was worth photographing as a group of photographers where hoarding the space around it. Well, when visiting places on a road trip like this you have to make do with what you get and be glad that you at least had the chance of seeing some of it.

Trevi Fountain

No visit to Rome would by complete without a visit to the Trevi Fountain, and that is apparently the opinion of most of the tourists in Rome. The area around the fountain is always packed with tourists and stalls selling trinkets to the needy so it can actually be difficult to see the beauty of the sculptures, let alone get a decent photo of them.

The best museum on classic Roman history in Rome is the Museo della Civiltá Romana, the Museum of Roman Civilisation. This great museum is hidden to most tourists in the EUR district, so only the most diehard history buffs go there, which is a shame. Here you find a lot of miniatures, casts of statues and columns, maps and other information telling you about this period. You can spend a whole day there and still feel that you got through the collections a bit too fast.

One of the few places in Rome not teeming with tourists is the district Mussolini planned, the EUR. This residential and business district might seem a bit off the beaten track to many visitors but it's interesting I think. Some of the buildings are spectacular in a way only a totalitarian could envision like this Palazzo della Civiltá Italiana.

We stayed just outside of Rome with a friend for almost two weeks with a few days break to the south (more of that later). Normally when visiting a city I get there by plane so I only seem to see the city centre. This time we had the chance of seeing a lot more of the surroundings, but nonetheless we started in the city. This is one of the gates to Rome, the beautiful Porta Pia.

A Deserted Beach Town

The first town we got to in Italy was Caorle, which even in summer seemed a bit sleepy. Maybe it was because we got there fairly late in the day but the beaches were deserted. Well, we weren't there for the beaches but just for a quick stopover, having driven from Münich via Bergtesgarden the same day.

Just south of Munich is the Alps and in the area of Obersalzberg is the Berchtesgarden and Kehlsteinhaus, Hitler's former tea house, also known as the Eagle's Nest. Below it lay the Berghoff which is now totally destroyed but on the site there's a very good museum about the Nazi-period here. We only had a few hours here before the trip took us further south through Austria, but it was worth it.

One of the popular museums in Munich is this one, the BMW Museum with the showroom BMW Welt just opposite it. We didn't visit the museum on this trip but we did have a look at the Welt, and that was great. Maybe next time the trip goes to Munich the museum will get a visit as well.

Thinking about the future

The last post of the year (no, I'm not done with the review of the year) features this one of the tower of Christiansborg, where the Danish parliament resides, and with a sculpture thinking. The last day of the year is good time to reflect on the future. Hopefully the current economic crisis in the world will be solved, but I guess it will demand a lot of thinking, a lot of deciding and a lot of action. Unfortunately that is not the three things the current crop of politicians are best at. And with that gloomy thought I wish you all a happy New Year, I hope all your wishes come through and that you and your family may prosper despite all.

Copenhagen Carnival

June also brought the Copenhagen Carnival to town. The Carnival, traditionally held on Pentecost, features hundreds of dancers and thousands of spectators during the 3-4 days it lasts. The biggest event is the parade on Strøget in the city where the dancers have to squeeze through the throngs of camera-touting tourists and residents.

June brought the Elephant Parade to Copenhagen with 102 elephants scattered around the city. A perfect opportunity to get out and try to get them all. I think I got most of them, but a few got away. Not this one though. It was situated right next to the Royal Library (the Black Diamond) with a view of the harbour.

June was a good time to visit family in Bogense on the island of Fünen. Here long walks can take you to beautiful views like this with the coast and the little island of Æbelø (Apple Island) in the background.

A walk of art

May was the month where the Danish town of Køge was transformed with a lot of street art. Walk This Way gave the public a chance to appreciate this art form over the summer. Some of it was interesting like this part called the Pink Army, and some of it was just weird.

It's Xmas

To most Danes this is the day after as we celebrate on Christmas Eve with a dinner of either roasted duck (my favourite) or roasted pork with caramelized potatoes and all the trimmings. Gifts are given after dinner and then it's time to enjoy a cup of coffee. And Christmas morning is usually a slow one unless a family lunch has to be prepared. Btw this is my sister's very nice version of the duck last year.

Start of the season

With May comes the season of outdoors entertainment and festivals to Copenhagen. And a relatively new addition to that is the Japanese Sakura Festival held near Langelinje. With drummers, archers, martial arts performances and lots of food stalls this is a crowd pleaser.

Long time, no see

With the southern Sweden within easy reach of Copenhagen, I sometimes take a quick trip to the brother-land. Usually it's to Malmö or Lund, but in April I decided to visit a town I hadn't seen since my childhood, Helsingborg just across the Øresund from yesterday's Helsingør. A nice town to spend a few hours in with the keep of Kärnan as a dominant landmark.

A once or twice a year I visit Helsingør and the castle of Kronborg. This year it happened to be on Occupation Day, 9th of April. I follow more or less the same route around the castle so I have tons of photos of it in every light imaginable.

Sure sign of Spring

A sure sign that spring is here in Copenhagen is when the Tivoli Gardens open again for business all clad in Easter colours. The daffodils were blooming there last April when they opened on this brilliant day. In the background is another landmark of Copenhagen, the City Hall Tower.

The sun is up and so am I

April is a good month in Copenhagen to get up early and start shooting a lot again after the long, dark winter. Flowers and trees start to bloom and the sun is up early enough, so that you can get up and out before the crowds. I took this one on the station of Vesterport an early Saturday last April, and yes, it is your truly on the left.

A secret garden

One of the many great places in Copenhagen to experience spring, or other seasons for that matter, is the Carlsberg Garden. Hidden inside the old brewery past this pathway and through a gate at the end, it's not a place that many visit or even know about, so here you're out of the crowds and the noise. And in March, when I went there it was really deserted.

March was a cold month in Copenhagen with the spring still struggling to get a foothold. The old harbour Nyhavn was frozen quite a bit into the month.

A city of lights

When night falls, and in February it does that early in February, the lights of Budapest turns on, illuminating it in a wonderful light. The Chain Bridge here just begged to be photographed on this night.

1956 - a year to remember

A year that the Hungarians understandably remembers is 1956, he year when the Hungarian people revolted against the oppression of the Soviets. The revolt was drowned in blood and the many dead are seen as martyrs in today's Hungary. In February I saw numerous statues and monuments all over Budapest to commemorate the events, like this one at the eternal Flame outside the parliament.

When travelling to a foreign city like Budapest, getting around can often be a challenge. Not in Budapest, though. Here the public transport worked, both trams, buses and metro, when I was there in February.

When travelling I often forget to relax as I want to see (and photograph) as much as possibly. Budapest in February seems to draw you indoor to the nearest waterhole as the temperatures are on the cold side. And Budapest is a good place to taste the local brew and food. It's plenty and to someone living in Copenhagen, nice on the wallet as well.

A Budapest Museum Worth Visiting

One of the museums on Castle Hill in Budapest that many tourists miss is the Museum of Military History, which takes the visitor trough the whole military history of Hungary, even the newer history like WWI, WWII and the uprising of 1956. To get through it you need more than just a little knowledge beforehand as most of the explanations are in Hungarian only. For a history buff like me, it was a good way to spend a couple of hours on a frigid February visit.

A place of history, new and old

One of the monuments clearly visible over Budapest that I noticed in February was this one, the Liberty Statue on Gellert Hill. Erected by the Soviets in 1947 it was originally to commemorate the victory over Nazi-Germany, but after democracy replaced communism in 1989 the inscription was changed from "Erected by the grateful Hungarian Nation in memory of the liberating Russian heroes" to "To the memory of all of those who sacrificed their lives for the independence, freedom, and success of Hungary." Budapest is truly a place of history, both new and old.

Beautiful Budapest

In February the camera focused on beautiful Budapest, a city I'd never been to before. Even though the stay was a bit too short to really see the city, and the weather a bit too cold to roam the streets for many hours without appropriate pit-stops, I really enjoyed the city and its people.The photo shows the grand Hero's Square, Hösök tere, with the Millennium Monument as the central piece.

How to find colours in February

If you're looking for colours in your photographs in Copenhagen in February, like I did last February, you have to be creative. This glass panel was part of a piece of art in Ørestaden, the newly developed area on Amager. The art is called the Island of Love (Kærlighedsøen in Danish) and features a pavilion with this glass roof and a column with 12 women.

I know that many people find it a bit morbid to visit cemeteries, but Vestre Cemetery in Copenhagen is a favourite for its many old monuments and park-like atmosphere. So there I was in February and couldn't resist snapping this broken profile.

Dyrehaven at Winter

Another place that regular readers have noticed I visit on a regular basis, is Dyrehaven just north of Copenhagen. All seasons here works for me, though it's wise to dress appropriately when trying to get photos like this in January.

A new Bridge

I often use a bit of time exploring the same areas of Copenhagen again and again just to notice the changes there during different seasons. In January I went to the South Harbour area (Sydhavnen), where the old harbour has been developed during the last few years into a residential and business area. To connect two of the islets a new bridge has been built, the Teglværksbroen, which I captured on this grey and calm winter day.

To answer the above question, how about visiting the National Gallery in Copenhagen? This I did in January when it was indeed grey and dull outside. A nice warm and relatively quiet museum with lots of beautiful art on the walls. And cameras are not frowned upon, except if you use flash or tripods.

January is not a photography month in CPH

Even though the weather in January in Copenhagen didn't scream out for a lot photography, there's still things to do, like visiting the Copenhagen Zoo. I got there around feeding time for this bird, as it gulped down the mouse. With an abundance of nice museums in Copenhagen, this is a fine time to get indoors to take some snaps of the exhibitions.

Soon it will be the last month of the year and this has made me think, that I'll use some posts here on looking back on it photography wise. My photography year started here in Arbrå in Sweden on New Year's morn with a very cold winter view. From there the year has taken me around Copenhagen a lot and Denmark a bit, not to mention a cold Budapest, a spring-warm Berlin, a great road trip through Germany, Italy and France, and a quick trip to London. So there's lot to tell you about in the next couple of weeks.

Basilica again

The last post from Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen for now is this photo the Basilica with the traditional Christmas decorations as a frame. Despite the more negative voices I've heard about this year's Russian theme, I actually think Tivoli has done a good job of weighing the traditional Danish Christmas with the Russian one. Just because it's new and foreign doesn't mean that it's not good.

It's a Garden

Tivoli in Copenhagen is not called the Tivoli Gardens for nothing. They take pride in having flowers and plants making the amusement park looking pretty no matter what time of the season it is. So expect to find flowers blooming or at least with colours even during the Christmas market. These yellow berries made for some nice colours against the clear blue sky the day I went there, so I had to have a few shots of them.

That's a reindeer

Tivoli even got live reindeer at their Christmas Market. These you can't buy, though, they're only for show. But a great thing to watch for the kids.

The Christmas opening at Tivoli was actually started as a Christmas market, and that is still very much the case. A lot of stalls selling all manner of Christmas or winter related stuff, like woollen gloves and fur hats, or stuff to eat or drink. It's probably not the cheapest place in town to buy your Christmas gifts, but I guess they have a lot of passers by that suddenly realize that they really do need that big ceramics Santa for the garden.

A tree of hearts

A tradition that still is on at Tivoli during Christmas is the tree of hearts. Hung with hearts that are lit at night and with three giant hearts made out of crystals beside it, it does make an impact on the visitors.

Getting some warmth

Xmas time is also a cold time in Denmark, so Tivoli has made sure that you can get some warmth into those frozen fingers by putting op these coal braziers around the garden.

An Icy Peacock

The elfs and the normal peacock on the pantomime theatre in Tivoli, has been replaced this Christmas with babushka dolls (actually they are matryoshka dolls) and a peacock with a ice-blue-and-white colour scheme. The dolls are part of a treasure hunt for children that will take them to various parts of the garden.

Still Traditional

I've heard some people complaining that it's not traditional to have a Russian Christmas in Tivoli and that the kids will be disappointed about it. Well, I'm not sure if these people has actually been around the gardens much or if they have only seen the Russian area, because there's still a lot of traditional stuff here. Outside the Restaurant Grøften patrons are greeted by this Santa in full gear and the gardens are filled to the brim with ordinary Christmas decorations, so yes, it's still very much a traditional Christmas here.

Father Frost

Visitors to Tivoli are greeted by the Russian version of Santa Claus, Father Frost, all decked out in blue and white. In the Russian area you can get your photo taken with him in his sled while having a cozy chat with him about your wishes for Christmas.

The Swan Lake

Another addition to Tivoli's Christmas Market this year is this Swan Lake, referring to Russian composer Tchaikovsky's ballet of that name. And as the swan also has a leading role in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Ugly Duckling and because the swan is the national bird of Denmark, it's a very appropriate thing to have here during the Russian Christmas Market.

Onion Domes

Inside Tivoli Gardens there is quite a surprise to many; a big scale model of a Russian Basilica, the Vasilij Cathedral with colourful onion domes instead of the traditional great hall with jolly pixies. And I must confess that as opposed to many others, I quite like the change.

Each year from mid-November until the end of December the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen has a Christmas market with a heavy emphasis on the traditional Christmas things; Santa Claus, lots of Christmas decorations and the appropriate food. But something is amiss. At the entrance to Tivoli a drummer stands guard, announcing that not all is as it used to be. And he looks suspiciously Russian.

At most parforce hunts there's no winner, but at the Hubertusjagt they've got a run-up for both horses and ponies, so here they can have a winner, or rather two. The trophy is here presented by HRH Prince Henrik to the winner of the pony run-up, Caroline Utzon-Rødbro on Mørkbaks Doth.

Whenever crowds gathers for an event the money sits loose in their pockets, and so the entrepreneurs gather as well. At the Hubertusjagt in Dyrehaven they know that people here are mostly families and that they like horses (or their kids do). So the local carriages, called kapervogne in Danish, are ready to transport people around for a buck or two.

How to catch a horse...or not

Not all the riders in Hubertusjagten stays on the horse all the time, so a horse with no rider is not out of the ordinary. In this instance this spectator didn't catch it, but he didn't get run over either. Horse and rider were united a few minutes later, though, as the horse sought its mates in the front of the pack.

A sport for spectators

With 30.000 to 40.000 people watching the Hubertusjagt this has turned this annual parforce hunt into a spectators sport, with the people flocking to the more spectacular obstacles. If the weather permits it, lunch and hot drinks are brought and the whole family can enjoy a day in the park among the deer.

The riders in the Hubertusjagt are in two packs, the regular horses first and the ponies behind them. But they mostly jump the same obstacles, so the ponies almost have to learn how to fly to get over.

The traditional parforce hunt, the Hubertusjagt was the event of the day last Sunday as it always is on the first Sunday in November. It is held in one of my favorite places, Dyrehaven, just north of Copenhagen and it's a brilliant way to spend an autumn grey Sunday, especially if you like to watch the world through a view finder.

A house for the industry

On Rådhuspladsen in central Copenhagen a building is taking shape. It's not really a new building but rather a heavily renovated one; the Industriens Hus (House of the Industry), which houses the Danish Industry, shops and a cinema. With a new glass façade, a newly shaped front and an extra floor this one looks like it's a major improvement over the original one, even though it might be to go too far to call it beautiful. The new building should be finished by 31th of May 2013.

Burned

On the 28th of September one of the landmarks of Copenhagen the sports and event hall KB-Hallen on Frederiksberg, burned. The massive fire gutted most of the hall but the fire brigade managed to save some of the adjoining buildings. As the building from 1938 is listed, it has been decided to rebuild it as it was before the fire. When that happens is still unsure.

When photographing with the macro lens I like to try to get as much blur (bokeh) in the background as possible by using as low an f-number as the lens will give. This flower from Kongens Have made for a nice green background when shot from above, with the flower stalk trailing a blurry purple.

To get the red deer in the frame here with my 70-300mm lens, I actually needed to go backwards, because it was too close to fit otherwise.

With the friendly stag almost posing it was difficult not to get some nice close-ups of it, even though the sun was on the wrong side of it. But then a little fill-in flash becomes handy, and the Nikon SB-400 is perfect for that.

I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the friendly deer in Dyrehaven this day. Others also thought it a good time to get a few pics of their kids near the stag.

Too close for comfort

Yesterday's red deer stag came too close for the comfort of these people, as it wandered right over to them. They were sitting right by the hunting lodge, Eremitagen, in Dyrehaven north of Copenhagen, enjoying the beautiful autumn sunshine. As the stag came within a few meters, people decided to move out of its way, because it sure didn't look like it was going to stop at anything. It wasn't in any way aggressive but it just seemed to ignore the 50 people around it in search of the greenest grass. And a lot of the spectators probably got the photos of the week there.

Hide and seek

The deer in Dyrehaven in Klampenborg are very friendly ones and used to people, so there's normally no reason to try to hide when you want to get close to one of them. This boy was trying to sneak up on the stag, but the stag just went its merry way, totally ignoring the people around it. Tomorrow I'll show you just how close he got to the public.

The last of the Camera+ photos from now is this almost surrealistic one from DR Byen, HQ of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. In front of the entrance is a sculpture that I've showed you before, and using the Camera+ for iPhone and the So Emo effect on the reflection does make an impact.

Red tones

With the Camera+ for iPhone-app it's easy to take a photo and change it into something that looks very different from the original. In this I've used the red-tones effect to exaggerate the autumn colours. The photo is from the moat around the Citadel (Kastellet) in Copenhagen.

On a rainy day

The nice thing about using the Camera+ for iPhone is that it's always there and ready, as it was this day during a torrential rainstorm in Valby, Copenhagen. It was shot out through the window of a bus number 18 and the rain on the glass made for this, imho, nice photo. And it only took about 30 seconds of editing on the iPhone and it was ready to publish.
